BEREAVEMENT MINISTRY OF MOUNT CALVARY CEMETERY

Grief is a journey or a process a person goes through in response to a loss of any kind.  A major type of grief is the loss of a loved one through death.

The need for an ongoing ministry to the bereaved is very important due to the fact the pain of grief has no timetable and can last a very long time. Not long after the funeral is over when friends stop calling the most intense pain of grief begins. Our society does not prepare us for this journey and often gives the impression that we should be “over it” in a very short period of time. Yet there is no getting over someone we love…there is only the long reality of intense pain and deep loneliness of the grief journey.

Grief Ministry--- a death in the family affects us all- the immediate family as well as the entire family community of friends and acquaintances. The Bereavement Ministry of Mount Calvary Cemetery provides an outreach to the bereaved through assistance to families in planning the funeral liturgy, support groups, monthly Masses at the Cemetery Mausoleum, as well as a Memorial Day Mass in the cemetery.

SUPPORT GROUPS

Support groups for the bereaved can be very powerful in promoting healing, offering information, and providing the help needed to work through the grief and to re-adjust to life by the mutual support and encouragement of others. Since people attending the group have gone through similar losses they are able to listen and understand in an authentic way.

The support groups are offered each season, one-day or evening per week for a total of eight weeks

Some of the benefits of supports groups are:

Verbalizing thoughts and feelings
Support of others who are also grieving
Helps to realize they are not alone in their grief

MONTHLY MASS AT THE MAUSOLEUM

Each second Saturday of the month there is a Mass at the Cemetery Mausoleum at 9: AM. This Mass is offered for the families who experienced the loss of a loved one the previous month.  During the Mass the names of those who died are mentioned for intercessory prayer.

ALL SOULS DAY

(November 2)

There is special Mass offered in the Mausoleum to remember all those who were buried in the Mount Calvary Cemetery and Mausoleum during the previous year. The Mass is a beautiful time for reflection and remembrance.

GOOD FRIDAY

Each year on Good Friday all are invited to pray the Stations of the Cross outside in the cemetery as the youth group of Ste. Marie Parish prayerfully dramatizes them. This event draws hundreds of people from all walks of life. Many families make this an annual event in their Lenten Journey as we follow Jesus’ journey to Calvary.

MEMORIAL DAY MASS

This mass is celebrated to honor our beloved dead that died in service to our country. Many veteran groups and hundreds of families gather in prayer as we remember all those who paid the ultimate sacrifice for us.
